Project Description

Scanlan Residence – Addition/Renovation, Lake Creek, Eagle County, CO; 5,200 s.f.; 2001.

The first two images (top left two images in image gallery) are of the home’s preexisting conditions. The proposed addition and alterations to the East elevation is shown in the preliminary sketch above. The work includes the addition of a new porch, the addition of a stone fireplace, and new windows. The new shed roof element added to the South elevation gives the great room extended volume and additional South facing windows. The new windows offer views of Mount Otis in the Sawatch Range. A screened in porch is added to the West elevation to enjoy the sights and sounds of the adjacent creek. The North elevation sketch shows the addition of the garage with the master suite above.  The addition was primarily over the garage and the garage itself, however the entire house got a face lift and new materials. The new exterior materials consist of shingles and stone. The existing interior spaces were also remodeled. The floor plan has been revised to accommodate the client’s needs. With the new mud room addition, the homeowner can walk from the main house to the garage without having to go outside. Also included in this addition is a new laundry room. From inside the mud room, stairs take you up to the new guest suite and study. From the top of the stair we can look back and see the new mud room.

A portion of the addition over the garage was split into a guest suite and study. The renovated study has a mix of wood and plaster finishes that creates a formal, yet comfortable space. The new shed dormers cut into the existing garage roof for the ceiling space of the study and guest bed/bath. The opposite half of the addition, over the garage, is a spacious master suite. The master suite also includes a gas fireplace. In the master bath, the tub deck leads into the shower as a seat. Both shower and tub overlook the river through windows in the shed dormer. The sitting area in this master suite walks out to a new deck that overlooks the river. The space under the loft has been utilized to accommodate the clients’ baby grand piano. The living room’s refaced fireplace can be enjoyed from several rooms of the home, thanks to the open floor plan.
